As of April 4th, anyone who has created a group will need to upgrade to a paid account in order to keep it active. You can get more detail and reason for the change here.

A couple changes have been made to the site. We have dropped public groups. You'll also notice a new tab among "Your Groups" called "My Account".

"My Account," shows you if your account is trial or full, active or suspended, and your current balance. You can also upgrade your account from trial to full and add funds to your account.

Today GroupFlier unviels Conference Calling and Voice Mail for your groups. Here is how to do it:

To start a conference call dial your group number and press 0 to start the conference. The group members will get a text message inviting them to join the call. Anyone can start a conference call for a chat group, but only the group creator can start a conference call for a broadcast group. A conference can have up to 40 participants.

To send a voice mail to the group dial your group number and press 3 to record a message. The group members will get a text message alerting them of the new voice mail. A voice mail message goes to everyone in a chat group. In a broadcast group a voice mail message from the creator goes to everyone, however a message from a member goes only to the creator. You can have multiple voice mail messages at a time. You can delete a voice mail message at any time.

We had a phenominal time in Austin with, LiveShare, Microsoft, Applications for Good, Ascentium, Akami, and other companies showing avant garde technology. A lot of people turned up for the event to hang out and have fun. We thank TechCocktail for putting it all together.

The weekend was full with interviews, panels, meetings—Oh, and parties. It was great to see so many people from so many different places using groupflier from their iPhone, Android, Blackberry, and standard cell phones. We got wonderful feedback.

'Broadcast' groups!

• In a chat group, when a member sends a message it goes to everyone in the group.
• In a broadcast group, when a member sends a message, it goes only to the group creator. When the group creator sends a message, it goes to everyone.

Dear Group Creators,

This release gives you greater control over your groups. Group creators can access the new features by logging into "Your Groups," clicking on a group name, and selecting "Settings."

1. As before, you can change the group name.
2. Now, you can set notifications for when group members join or quit the group. Disabling these notifications is useful for groups who are constantly changing or if you don't really care who is in your group.
3. Another feature allows the group creator to be the only sender in a group. This feature is great for promotional uses. (So you can actually talk to your scremaing fans.)
4. Also, you can disable the *who command for group members to allow for a little more privacy. As group creator you will still be able to see and manage the group. With this feature, you can give your group a more personal feel.
5. Finally, we allow you to restrict the *add command to only the group creator. No one else can add people, but you with this command.

Social Text Co. Groupflier Raises Seed Round, Lets 'Old Phone Live Again'

Groupflier this week launched its mobile social texting software and confirmed a $500,000 seed round, raised last summer from Novak Biddle Venture Partners.

Co-founder Morris Panner declined to give the company's valuation. Novak Biddle General Partner Phil Bronner has joined Panner on the board of Groupflier, which is operated by TownFlier Inc.

Groupflier's software enables users to send text messages to groups that they create and to follow the conversation threads of texts, seeing who said what and when. It works across several devices, which Panner views as an important competitive advantage.

"Not everybody can afford or wants a smart phone," he said. "Our motto is, let your old phone live again."

Eventually, Groupflier will make money from selling premium services to businesses and contextual ads that will target consumers based on their locations -- if someone has just played tennis, maybe they'd like a sandwich, Panner said. For now, though, Groupflier is focused on attracting users and has about 1,000 so far.

Groupflier is Panner's second venture-backed company -- he sold his first one, OpenAir Inc., to NetSuite Inc. in June 2008, for approximately $26 million in cash, according to VentureWire archives.
